Description

"Gower is that little scrap of green on the map of Wales which juts untidily from the south coast, as though the maker of the mountain block let his finger slip in passing on to the west. Its ragged outline is its chief beauty, the grey bastions of the cliffs cradling broad sandy bays and thrusting seaward again as rugged headlands. It is in Great Britain to have been designated an 'Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty' in 1957 by the National Parks Commission.

Stretching along the South coast from the tidal islands of the Mumbles to the tidal island of the Worm, carboniferous limestone cliff rise in blocky magnificence. Their feet washed by a line of creaming surf, their gaces lashed by gales from the Atlantic; but they soak up sunshine where the winds are blocked and reflect an oceanic mildness." From A Natural History of Gower by Mary. E. Gillham.

The bouldering on the Gower Peninsula provide some spectacula problems in some of the most beautiful bays in South Wales. The bouldering areas generally has clear and sandy landings apart from Limeslade Bay which tends to be on the pebbly side, but nonetheless holds some excellent problems.

All the problems including the descriptions and pictures in the following areas, except where indicated, are taken from Adrian Berry's guide of the Gower he published back in 1996-7. I've chosen to re-publish his guide on the web as I haven't see his guide sold in the shops (which was sold on two sides of two A4 pieces of blue card) for at least four years now and didn't want his hard work to go unrecognised and forgotten. Nice work Adrian.

You can download your own copy the Adrian Berry's guide of the Gower by clicking on the links Bouldering PDF 1 and Bouldering PDF 2 under the section Related articles on Planet-Climbing by going to his website PlanetFear where the diagrams are of a much higher quality. This link also contains more info of the climbing found in south wales.
